How long will the whitening results last?

Stains on tooth enamel accumulate very slowly over a period of time. Once that is successfully whitened, the color usually lasts quite a long time and rarely returns to its deeply stained state.

However, teeth whitening results are not permanent whether it was done in-office or at home. Generally, teeth whitening can last up to one, two or three years after professional in-office teeth whitening, and approximately three to eight months after teeth whitening at home.

It is difficult to predict how long the whitening results will last. Different types and shapes of teeth, the nature of teeth discoloration and thickness of the enamel of each individual must be considered. The duration of teeth whitening depends on your diet and lifestyle as well. Immediately after treatment do not drink coffee, tea, red wine and avoid food like beetroot, blackcurrants and highly spiced sauces, as color molecules stain tooth enamel.

To prolong teeth whitening results, you must refrain from smoking because nicotine in tobacco discolors teeth. People who consume foods and beverages that cause staining may experience the whiteness gradually fading away.

Practice good oral hygiene like brushing with whitening toothpaste particularly after consuming staining foods or beverages. Another good habit is to gargle with peroxide after brushing to prevent staining and keep teeth healthy.

After teeth whitening, you can maintain the level of whiteness pretty easily by using the take-home bleach trays and just wearing them for about an hour every month. This technique helps the whiteness to last longer and stop the stain gradually settling on the teeth. If over-consumption of tea, coffee, wine, tobacco and other staining foods was the reason for teeth discoloration, and you continue this routine, the whitening effect will not last as long. The only solution is to have touch-ups at regular intervals.

If your teeth are hereditarily stained or the stains are due to serious disease you may require teeth whitening treatment every few years. To make the correct decision and follow up treatment for each individual case, it is important you consult a cosmetic dentistry expert who has a thorough training, to assure you a bright and healthy smile that can makeover your life.
