The basics of dental crowns in Spokane

For the dental patient who has a cracked, chipped, or otherwise damaged tooth, a dental crown can provide an affordable and convenient alternative to an implant or a bridge. A crown can also be used to restore a tooth that is excessively worn, or has a very large filing due to significant decay. These situations cause the enamel to become weakened and unstable. The crown protects the tooth from further damage.

There are two types of crowns, temporary and permanent. The dentist must make an impression of the tooth where the crown will be placed. If the crown is to be permanent or used to provide support for a bridge, the impression is sent to a lab where the restoration will be precisely crafted. For temporaries, the impression is often used to make the crown in the dentist’s office.

Temporary crowns are typically made of either acrylic or stainless steel. There are a number of choices of materials that can be used for permanent crowns. Base metal or gold crowns are often preferred by dental patients as long-term cost-effective and durable materials. Since this metals do not match the natural color of teeth, however, many people limit use to back molars.

Materials used for crowns on front teeth, where there is less bite pressure and aesthetics is more of a concern, vary. For affordability, resins are often chosen. This type of material tends to wear down and fracture more easily than some others, though.

Porcelain offers the best color match with natural teeth, and is very wear-resistant. For front teeth, where a natural look is desired, or for patients with allergies to metal, porcelain might be the best option. To ensure durability, a thicker covering of porcelain is required, so more of the original tooth structure must be removed to allow proper fit. Because porcelain is so strong, it can cause wear to the opposing tooth.

With extensive experience in dental crown restorations, Dr. Heidergott will recommend the best type of crown for your situation, your budget, and your smile.
