Gum irritation is just one of the main complaints patients have when they first start wearing braces. But this is only temporary and after a period of time the tissue will toughen up and be more resistant.
One method to overcome this problem is by placing orthodontic wax over the brackets to soften the abrasion and decrease irritation. The latest treatment is a silicone type of “wax” that come off as easily. After eating, remember to replace the gel or the wax on the brackets.
Also, if the wire sticks out the end of the last bracket on the back molar, it means it is too long and will protrude to the cheeks. A dentist or your orthodontist can avoid this painful situation by ascertaining that the wire does not stick out too far so as to avoid poking into the cheek.
There are other ways to ease irritations inside your mouth during the first weeks of wearing braces. Gums develop sores because they are not used to the unevenness of the braces. A light solution of warm salt water rinse, many times daily prove very soothing. A mixture of hydrogen peroxide, salt and baking soda is effective too but be careful not to swallow. Mouth rinse available off the shelf can also help to destroy some of the bacteria in your mouth while helping to ease the pain.
Lysine tablets containing amino acid usually cure canker sores. Tylenol or Advil taken every four to six hours also help relieve the pain that remains for about one to three days when teeth are initially moved.
Products like Anbesol or Orajel temporarily numb the affected area and eating ice-cream or sucking ice-cubes numb your mouth and reduces pain temporarily. Refrain from hard, crunchy or spicy foods and chewing gum as well as hot drinks and food.
Using toothpaste without SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) or other irritating chemicals reduces gum irritation. Brushing with a soft toothbrush after meals and flossing daily prevents canker sores. Another popular home remedy is tea. Tea has astringent, which means wetting black tea bags and placing it on canker sores relieves pain.
