The easiest way to keep your braces clean after you eat at a restaurant or when traveling is to carry an orthodontic travel toothbrush with you. It is specially designed with very soft dual-colored bristles that are v-cut for braces. The bristles in the middle of the brush are shorter than at the ends and will clean both your teeth and braces. It is durable and of superior quality with a compact head. It comes in a carry case, which makes it easy for travel. While brushing, make sure that you brush for at least two minutes, in particular the gum line which is the most important. Afterward, rinse it with water, wipe dry and place it in the case.
Another nice little tool used to keep braces clean is the proxy brush that helps get underneath the wire to remove particles stuck in hard-to-reach places in braces and bridgework. You don’t need toothpaste to use this item. It helps in removing plaque, and you simply have to wet the brush and place it into the space between your teeth. Shift the brush in and out lightly, slide it out, and then wash it off. Repeat this with every space. Be gentle and avoid pushing the brush into very small spaces. Also, be cautious not to disturb the braces. Carrying a pocket sized proxy-brush with its own case and single cone-shape helps to pick stubborn particles out, as well.
It is practical to carry a portable dental kit when traveling. The kit includes a regular toothbrush or a travel toothbrush, toothpaste fluoride, spiral dental brush, dental wax, folding cup, floss threaders and dental floss, interdental picks, tissues, and a mouth mirror.
If you are without a toothbrush after a meal at a restaurant, you can walk into the restroom and see if any food looks obviously stuck in your braces. Then try swishing the particles out with water. Having food stuck in your braces for hours is bad for your breath too.
