How does Neuromuscular Therapy differ from regular massage therapy?

What is the difference between Neuromuscular Therapy and regular massage therapy? While the names of the two treatments may sound the similar, they are vastly different from each other.

Neuromuscular therapy is not necessarily just muscular therapy. It most likely refers to the rehabilitation of other body muscles and nerves to help them re-establish their connection to the brain, from either surgery or an accident.

Massage therapy, on the other hand, is the rejuvenation and relaxation of the large muscles of the body that are most often affected by over-use and in some cases, due to previous injury.

Similar to the various therapies that are available for the muscles of the body, there are also methods of therapy for the muscles of the mouth. NM Dental Therapy or better referred to as NM Dentistry, is specific to the muscles that we chew with, as well as those that support our head and neck and how they interact with the teeth or bite, the jaw joints, the airway, and the upper cervical vertebrae C-1 and C-2. The degree to which all of these muscles are able to work together in harmony, can and will over time, affect most of the other postural muscles of the body, as well as many organ systems.

Some of the more subtle symptoms that can disrupt the harmonious work of the muscles include altered taste, burning tongue/mouth, ear pain, ringing of the ears, muffled hearing, balance, blood pressure, cortisol (stress hormone), numbness of arms and fingers, headaches, neck aches, and numerous referred pain patterns to the upper body.

Therefore, like the muscles and nerves of the body, it’s important that the muscles of the mouth are also taken care of properly. If the muscles in the mouth do not work together smoothly, then it can affect the rest of the body as well.
