TMJ-TMD
TMD refers to Temporomandibular Disorder, which is a syndrome that involves the jaw joint, as well as the muscles of the head, neck, jaw, face, ears, and shoulders. It also includes the bite and how the tongue postures as well as the airway. Most laymen are familiar with the term “TMJ” which refers to the Temporomandibular Joint and is often used in reference to the TMD Syndrome. Both terms, TMD and TMJ, are commonly used to describe this disorder. TMD can be caused by an injury or accident, or even be inherited at birth, and is often exacerbated by stress and tension in the related muscles.
People with TMJ in most cases do not trace their symptoms to the root cause. They might look for a host of other reasons for suffering recurring headaches, migraine, dizziness, shoulder pain, stiffness in the neck area, pain in the jaw, humming in the ears, or even clicking in the jaws.
The loss of proper function and balance of the chewing muscles along with missing or mal-positioned teeth can ultimately affect the jaw joint. When these muscles of the head and neck are out of sync with the jaw joints and teeth (bite), various levels of TMD Syndrome are the result.. Unstable occlusion has further harmful effects on your teeth which can cause constant clenching and/or grinding. It also causes the commonly seen notching at the gum line area of teeth.
