The history of beach cruiser bikes goes far back in time, to the years between World War I and World War II. At first, these bikes were designed to look like motorcycles (but without the actual motor). Soon enough, they became very popular because they were practical, easy to use and much less expensive than other types of bikes in the market. During the 1930s and 1940s, these bikes had become extremely popular, but a new wave of bikes brought from Great Britain was about to threaten the cruisers’ popularity during the 1950s. Cruiser bikes came back to our attention at the beginning of the 1990s and it seems that they are here to stay.
Although many people consider beach cruiser bikes to be for leisure rides and running errands that do not require much speed, the truth is that you can use one such bike for a very good workout as well. Cruiser bikes can be excellent for workout, but you have to make sure that you maintain yourself pedaling. If your fitness level is very low, they can be very good to help you improve this and gain a bit of strength in your muscles. Furthermore, if you use the tip of your toes instead of the entire flat foot when you pedal, you will increase the intensity of the workout. This is so because your legs will stretch a lot during your ride and you will be able to feel your muscles work.
Even more, if you have a beach cruiser that allows you to stand up straight, it will be great for your back as well. Normal bikes are usually ridden from a slouchy position, which puts a lot of pressure on your lower back. However, with a beach bike designed for sitting up straight, you can relieve yourself from this side effect and you can let go of the back pain.
Regardless of whether it is for your relaxation or for weight loss, riding a cruiser bike can be extremely beneficial. Start riding for as long you can feel comfortable with, but do make sure you feel your muscles working. As you gain more strength and you improve your cardio rate, increase the number of minutes you ride your bike. Eventually, you will end up getting a great workout with a very small amount of money and your health will thank you for it later on!
